As reported by Mike Roberts –
After months of logistics preparation worthy of a naval exercise, a dozen TL runners recruited from around the country performed magnificently in Hood to Coast. We finished the 197 miles in a bit over 29 hours, (1pm Fri to 6pm Sat), which is a sub nine minute mile pace. Of a thousand teams competing, we finished 396. Not bad for a first time outing! Especially with a certified old fart as Team Captain.
The weather was the wildest in race memory – a crashing thunder and lightning storm in the middle of Friday night, and a violent windstorm on Saturday that blew down parts of the finish line and caused it to be moved off the Seaside beach at the last moment.
No one stopped running or got more than a few minutes sleep. The esprit de corps, not to mention the joie de vivre, were spectacular.
Team support was phenomenal as well. Mark Luker and Jennifer Roberts drove for thirty hours straight. Jennifer was Quartermaster and chef, to great applause. (Also kept Mikey in line.)
Tony Roberts, in the Roberts’ Tacoma, was official photographer and is working up great images which will be posted on the Team Ladera site soon. The one below is of Sue Rohan, our final runner, leading the charge on the last 100 feet of the course, followed by the rest of the team, not all of whom can be seen, surrounded by thousands of onlookers.
