Nancy Horton
Runner #1
Bethesda, MD; Age 51
Bethesda, MD; Age 51
Nancy jumped at friend Sue Rohan's invitation to join this year's team. Who could pass up an opportunity to run 5.5 miles DOWN a volcano? Nancy is very familiar with relays, having captained an American Odyssey relay team for the last 5 years -- a 220 mile race from Gettysburg PA to DC. This year, friend Sue joined Nancy's team, dazzling everyone with her can-do spirit. Nancy's team has won the female master's division for 3 out of the last 5 years -- just don't ask how many teams they were competing against. Nancy typically runs leg 6 -- an infamous 6.5 mile, 1,236 ft. climb UP South Mountain. She is so excited to be running leg 1 of this relay where she will finally have a chance to run downhill! Nancy is a member of the Montgomery County Road Runners Club and she is currently training for the Marine Corps Marathon, her 3rd marathon. When not running, biking or adventuring, Nancy is a graduate student finishing a Masters degree in teaching.
Philippe Hanset
Runner #2
Knoxville, TN; Age 50
Knoxville, TN; Age 50
Philippe's visionary father gave him his first pair of running shoes when he was five, which, Philippe admits, that at that age it was a bit of a chore, but it built good cardio forever! In grad school, Philippe used running as a relaxation activity and drove his thesis advisor nuts with his favorite sentence “Mens Sana In Corpore Sano." Whether it is going up Diamond Head from Waikiki with RAM (Running At Meetings from Internet2) or joining friends from Knoxville to run the Bourbon Chase Ultra, Philippe always enjoys a new running challenge. His training consists of either Mountain Biking, Road Cycling, or Cyclo-Cross -- until about a month before the event, he hunts for his equipment and hits the pavement or trails. Philippe is looking forward to meeting the team and starting the HTC adventure!
Amy Gonsier
Runner #3
Redwood City, CA; Age 61
Redwood City, CA; Age 61
Amy has been running for about the last 26 years, and has run 27 marathons, beginning when her son was two years old (he is now turning 21) and even more half marathons. Although her times are getting slower, she's still having fun. Amy has done one previous relay, in California in the late 90s and is really looking forward to the Hood to Coast run. Along with Chandra and Kelly, Amy is a member of the Tattersols running team and since joining them, has been doing more trail running.
Sue Rohan
Runner #4
Chevy Chase, MD; Age 63
Chevy Chase, MD; Age 63
Sue began running later in life and ran her first half marathon in 2007. She graduated to full marathons in 2013, completing four since then. Sue was shocked to cut 35 minutes off her last marathon to place 20th in her age group. When not running, Sue is biking, hiking, cross-training, or writing Medicare regulations. Sue and Mark have hiked on Mt. Hood and can’t understand how all the vans will pull off the exchanges during the race! Mostly she wonders where the women will pee.
Peter Ilgenfritz
Runner #5
Seattle, WA
Seattle, WA
Peter Ilgenfritz is excited to be a late addition to the team and getting to run with new friends and his sister Nancy. He began running more seriously a few years ago and ran the Chicago marathon in 2014 and the New Orleans marathon in February 2016. He learned to sail 3 years ago and one of his favorite parts of his ministry at university congregational united church of Christ in Seattle where he is a pastor is taking members and friends out for a sail on the great sea of Lake Union in downtown Seattle. Peter recently got married this past April and just got back from a honeymoon in Paris where he practiced my hill work walking up the Arc de Rriumph and Notre Dame! He's ready for a fun weekend!
Scott Pohlman
Runner #6
St. Louis, MO; Age 56
St. Louis, MO; Age 56
Scott has been running for 30 years and has done five marathons and lots of half marathons. He makes up for the lack of marathons by doing them in interesting locations, including marathons in Rome and Budapest. Scott has run the KT82 relay in Missouri and a conversation about the race with Mark Johnson (who ran with Team Ladera in 2015) led to the invite to participate in the Hood to Coast. He's hoping to survive!
Samara Meckel
Runner #7
San Jose, CA; Age 29
San Jose, CA; Age 29
Samara started running for fun in 2011 when she signed up for a marathon training group. That year she completed three half marathons and one full marathon, and has been hooked ever since. Samara also practices Bikram yoga, and is really excited to have the opportunity to participate for the second time in Hood to Coast with an amazing team!
Alyssa Giacalone
Runner #8
Kelly Kline
Co-captain and Runner #9
San Jose, CA; Age 47
San Jose, CA; Age 47
Kelly is a third generation Northern Californian, chronic marathoner, trail runner, book reader, scrabble player, and adventure lover. She lives in Downtown San Jose with her husband Chris, and 12-year-old daughter Helen. She got the running bug 25 years ago (gulp) as a college student. She enjoys any distance, as long as there's good food and good company. She did her first 50k in 2014. She belongs to the Tattersols Women's running team based in Palo Alto along with Chandra, and dozens more inspiring female athletes. She loves relay running (has done many!) and is very excited to return to HTC!
Steve Corbato
Team Captain and Runner #10
Portland, OR; Age 55
Portland, OR; Age 55
While continuing to run intermittently after a mostly forgettable prep distance career in the 70's, Steve Corbató began to log longer, steady mileage again five years ago. He runs primarily today to wage a Quixotesque battle against genetics, age, and weight and to find life purpose through his mileage tracking spreadsheet and MapMyRun. Steve typically runs 4-5 halves and a similar number of 10Ks each year. HTC16 is Steve's second long-distance relay event; he was the lead runner for Team Ladera at HTC15.
Norm Bone
Runner #11
Portland, OR ; Age 50
Portland, OR ; Age 50
Norm turned 50 this year - and is celebrating by doing Hood-to-Coast!
Chandra Ramamoorthy
Runner #12
Mountain View, CA; Age 61
Mountain View, CA; Age 61
Chandra is an avid backpacker and hiker from Seattle who moved to the Bay Area 14 years ago. Having run 2 marathons in the early 90's, she restarted running as the mountains in Tahoe were not easy to get to from Stanford. Tattersols, a women's running group on Stanford campus, made her "regular." She is a friend of Steve Corbato's from his skiing days and has run several events and relays with Team Ladera!
